An ode to my nephew Elijah! You my boy have went around the sun 365 days today. You’ve graced us with your smile and all the joy your little body can muster.
Elijah you came into a world that is broken, but you’ve already done so much to fix it with simply just existing as your full black self, by being you you’ve brought light.
Elijah I am not going to lie to you the night you were born was scary for all of us, you see my boy you were born in your moms bathroom right on that floor.
Elijah that wasn’t your birth plan but you must know that the racism that the medical system holds against your black parents rendered banner staff unwilling to believe your mother when she told them you were coming.
Elijah your mother went into the hospital asking for help and just like other black mothers before her she was not believed. She was turned away to face giving birth at home, unplanned and unprepared. Elijah they sent your mother and father home and in less than 2 hours your papa ran into my room screaming that you were coming.
Elijah I jumped up saw your mom screaming and ran to grab gloves and clean towels, you see Elijah your mama was not believed by banner hospital but she knew you were coming that day.
Elijah we welcomed you into our lives in a very scary way because of systemic racism. But once you were born and crying in your mothers arms we knew you’d be okay.
Elijah you are a reminder of what is beautiful and good in this world.
Elijah you are a reminder of God’s miracles.
Elijah you are black boy joy! You are an inspiration and on this celebration of your 1 year around the world! I want you to know that you are loved.
Elijah I want you to know that you have an army in front of you and behind you that will help guide all of your steps and should we fail from time to time as humans might, know that God who sought fit to put you in our lives will protect you.
Elijah you matter so much and hold a value that can’t not be properly put into words.
Elijah you will change the world 🌎 I know this feels like a lot to put on a child, but you are magical and special and the world is yours to maneuver as you please.
Elijah you being in my life is such a blessing, you see when I am feeling depressed and all I need is to hear your little laughter, so careless and free and my heart ❤️ just warms up and reminds me that life will be okay.
My dearest Elijah I could write you a novel which I might still write in the future, but for now what I will do is say simply thank you so much for gracing us with your existence and I hold it such a pleasure and a privilege to share this time in this universe with you. Aunty loves you so much and there is not a barrier that I wouldn’t breakthrough to see you smile 😊
